PCS Announces Search for Next Artistic Director

Piedmont Chamber Singers, a volunteer chamber choir of auditioned singers known for their outstanding musicianship, is seeking an Artistic Director to be named for the 2010-2011 season.

Founded in 1977, the Piedmont Chamber Singers are celebrated in the Winston-Salem area for their sensitive and well-polished performances. The choir rehearses each week on Tuesday evenings, with more rehearsals approaching concert dates. There are typically four major performances each year, as well as a free concert at historic Bethabara at Christmas and some other appearances for fundraising and other events. Frequently, one of the four subscription concerts involves a professional chamber orchestra. The group’s repertory ranges from such major works as Bach’s B-minor Mass to a cappella works by Britten, Brahms, and others. With a strong commitment to new music, PCS has given many premieres of pieces by several composers, including many local artists.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic leader with extensive knowledge of repertory for small choral ensembles and works for small chorus and orchestra. The Artistic Director should have demonstrated ability to:

work with and build an outstanding choral ensemble;
assemble exciting and attractive repertory;
build and maintain audiences;
build and maintain a donor base;
build successful relationships in the arts and funding community.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

conducting rehearsals and concerts;
selecting singers based on audition;
making artistic decisions related to the group;
working with the General Manager and the Treasurer to prepare the annual budget;
attending meetings and reporting to the Board of Directors, as requested.

The Artistic Director is selected and employed by the Piedmont Chamber Singers Board of Directors by means of a contract which is renegotiated annually.
